Our Story

Firestone Country Club’s rich history dates back to 1929, when tire magnate Harvey S. Firestone envisioned a private retreat for his company’s employees and business partners. The original South Course, designed by Bert Way, set the foundation for a club that would soon become synonymous with championship golf and timeless hospitality.

Building a Legacy of Champions

Through the decades, Firestone has hosted some of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, from the PGA Championship and World Golf Championships to today’s Kaulig Companies Championship. Legendary designers Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Tom Fazio helped shape the club’s three iconic layouts, earning Firestone its reputation as one of the game’s true tests of greatness.

A Tradition That Endures

Today, Firestone Country Club continues to honor its historic prestige while providing modern comfort and amenities. Members enjoy championship golf, dining, fitness, and a welcoming community. Nearly a century after its founding, Firestone remains a place where stories are made and the spirit of the game lives on.

Kaulig Companies Championship

Over the last 70+ years of professional tournament golf, Firestone Country Club has built an incredible history of stories from the greatest legends to ever play the game. During that time, Firestone's South Course begun hosting the annual Kaulig Companies Championship, one of five major championships on the PGA TOUR Champions. Through these events, Firestone has raised over $30 million for local non-profit organizations since 1984. The Kaulig Companies Championship will be held July 8-12, 2026, at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Inception

Harvey S. Firestone commissions the South Course as a private retreat for Firestone Tire Company employees. Designed by Bert Way, the club officially opens with Firestone himself driving the first tee shot.

Where Champions Play

Firestone makes its debut on the PGA Tour by hosting the Rubber City Open Invitational, marking the start of its championship legacy.

New Beginnings

After a fire destroys the original clubhouse, construction begins on the iconic 125-foot water tower that still stands as a landmark today.

South Course Redesign

Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigns the South Course, adding bunkers, ponds, and length in preparation for the PGA Championship. Firestone hosts the event later that same year.

Welcoming the North Course

The North Course opens, also designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., expanding the club’s offerings with another championship-level layout.

Unveiling the West Course

The West Course opens, later redesigned by Tom Fazio to blend modern playability with classic Firestone character.

Global Championship Beginnings

Firestone becomes the host site of the inaugural WGC–NEC Invitational, ushering in a new era of global championship golf.

WGC–Bridgestone Invitational Era

The WGC–Bridgestone Invitational is held annually at Firestone, attracting the world’s top players and defining the modern chapter of its tournament history. Most notably this year was Tiger Woods’ infamous Shot in the Dark at Firestone.

Global Championship Venue

Hosted World Golf Championships – NEC Invitational.

Bridgestone Legacy

South Course ranked No. 88 in the Golf Magazine “United States Top 100 Courses” - Hosted World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational - Awarded Invited’s Gold Circle of Excellence.

Gold Standard Golf

South Course ranked No. 99 in the Golf Week “America’s Best Classic Courses” - Hosted World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational - Awarded Invited’s Gold Circle of Excellence.

Continued Accolades
