Our Story

Influenced in part by founding Member Mayor Tom Bradley, City Club LA was founded in 1989 in Downtown Los Angeles with a simple idea: to create a place where leaders from every corner of the city could come together to connect, do business, share ideas, and engage in meaningful conversation.

At a defining moment in the evolution of private clubs, the Club was created with a clear commitment to inclusion—welcoming Members across gender, race, background, and industry from its earliest days.

More than three decades later, that founding principle remains unchanged. City Club LA continues to reflect the diversity and ambition of the city itself—a place above the skyline where Members connect, collaborate, and feel at home.

A Vision Shaped by Leadership

In 1989, City Club Los Angeles was founded with a bold vision—shaped in part by the leadership legacy of Tom Bradley, one of the city’s most influential mayors. During Bradley’s tenure, Los Angeles was undergoing significant economic, cultural, and social transformation. Yet many private clubs remained exclusive, often limiting access based on gender or background. City Club was created to reflect a different future. From the beginning, the Club brought together a diverse community of professionals and civic leaders, becoming one of the first private business clubs in Los Angeles intentionally designed to be inclusive—welcoming women and minorities as full members. This commitment established a foundation that continues today: a place where connections cross boundaries, the membership reflects the diversity of Los Angeles, and leadership and opportunity come together in a shared community.

A New Space

The Club relocates to its current home on the 51st floor of the City National Plaza building at 555 S. Flower Street.

Reimagining the Club

The 27,000-square-foot Club was thoughtfully modernized to reflect the energy of Downtown Los Angeles, drawing inspiration from its vibrant districts, from fashion and finance to theatre, the arts, and the historic core.

Celebrating the Past & Future

The Club celebrates a Founders Day Luncheon marking 35 years since opening and reaffirms its commitment to diversity and community leadership.

ELEVATED FOR THE NEXT ERA

In 2025, City Club Los Angeles unveiled its latest evolution—an elevated club experience designed for the way today’s leaders connect, work, and socialize. Building on its legacy of innovation and inclusivity, the refresh introduced: Modernized interiors that balance comfort with sophistication Flexible spaces for networking, collaboration, and private events Enhanced culinary and social programming tailored to a dynamic membership A continued focus on community, diversity, and forward-thinking leadership
