Unmatched Beauty and Challenge

Designer: Robert Trent Jones Jr.

The South Course at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club opened 8 years after the North Course in 1995. While the North Course is long and open, the South Course, at 6900 yards as known as a shotmaker’s course. With tighter fairways and small, undulating greens, the course can challenge and reward players of different abilities.

One of the memorable holes on the South Course is hole 8. This picturesque par three requires a precise tee shot to navigate the pond that covers the length of the right side of the hole, with a well-positioned bunker on the left, taking away your bail-out option. This beautiful hole can make or break your round in a hurry.

Handicaps:
Men's 11 Women's 11

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 415

BLUE 364

GOLD 389

RED 303

WHITE 329

Pro Tips

The opening hole is a par 4 that features a lateral hazard that cuts into the fairway on the tee shot. Longer hitters can take their shots over a series of bunkers on the left to a fairway that opens up. Bunkers guard the front, back, and left side of this predicable green.

# 2 / Hole #2

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 7 Women's 13

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 360

BLUE 333

GOLD 533

RED 447

WHITE 460

Pro Tips

This short par 4 may tempt some to lay-up off the tee, but the fairway widens closer to the green, so driver is often a solid play. A lateral hazard runs up the right side of the hole and out-of-bounds guards the left.

# 3 / Hole #3

Par: 5

Handicaps:
Men's 1 Women's 1

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 541

BLUE 511

GOLD 533

RED 447

WHITE 460

Pro Tips

The third is the first par 5 and the hardest hole on the golf course. It’s a three-shot hole, due to the sharp dogleg left off the tee and a pond that sits in front of the green.

# 4 / Hole #4

Par: 3

Handicaps:
Men's 17 Women's 17

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 141

BLUE 121

GOLD 129

RED 95

WHITE 110

Pro Tips

The green on this par 3 is long, thin, and angled at 45 degrees. Bunkers protect short and left of the putting surface, while anything long can also bring in high numbers.

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 13 Women's 9

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 387

BLUE 362

GOLD 379

RED 311

WHITE 323

Pro Tips

An uphill tee shot to a generous fairway awaits players on the par 4, fifth hole. The second shot is also uphill, but this time it’s a blind one into the green that slopes back-to-front.

# 6 / Hole #6

Par: 5

Handicaps:
Men's 15 Women's 7

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 555

BLUE 502

GOLD 534

RED 451

WHITE 475

Pro Tips

A left-to-right ball flight is ideal off the tee on this long, downhill, dogleg right par 5. Aiming at the left side of the right fairway bunker will kick down and leave a relatively short second shot. The green is flat and is guarded by a lateral hazard on the backside.

# 7 / Hole #7

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 9 Women's 5

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 399

BLUE 368

GOLD 380

RED 265

WHITE 333

Pro Tips

The tee shot on the par 4, seventh looks like it will land in the middle of a bunker minefield. A good line is to take it at the bunkers with a left-to-right ball flight. Lateral hazards approach quickly on the right side and approach shots are better off missing long than short, due to a false front on the green.

# 8 / Hole #8

Par: 3

Handicaps:
Men's 5 Women's 15

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 197

BLUE 171

GOLD 190

RED 151

WHITE 159

Pro Tips

The eighth features an intimidating tee shot over a water hazard that runs from tee-to-green. Bailing out long and left is the best option from the tee, but that’ll even leave a tough up-and-down for par.

# 9 / Hole #9

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 3 Women's 3

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 488

BLUE 436

GOLD 461

RED 393

WHITE 420

Pro Tips

The final hole on the front nine is a long par 4 that demands two excellent shots to reach the green in regulation. An aggressive line off the tee is at the bunker on the left that flirts with the out-of-bounds. The safe play is to take it down the right, though that’ll leave a longer approach. This green is surrounded by bunkers front and back with Coto’s version of the “Valley of Sin” in front.

# 10 / Hole #10

Par: 3

Handicaps:
Men's 6 Women's 18

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 219

BLUE 182

GOLD 198

RED 125

WHITE 145

Pro Tips

The back nine opens with a long par 3 that typically plays into the wind. A waste bunker protects the right side of the fairway while a lateral hazard protects the left. The green slopes back-to-front and plays slower than it appears, due to Santiago Peak.

# 11 / Hole #11

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 8 Women's 14

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 418

BLUE 378

GOLD 407

RED 314

WHITE 345

Pro Tips

A tee shot that moves left-to-right, away from the lateral hazard that lines the left side of the hole, is a solid play off the tee. Fairway bunkers protect the right side of the hole, so those must be avoided as well. The green is fairly large and one of the flattest on the course.

# 12 / Hole #12

Par: 5

Handicaps:
Men's 10 Women's 4

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 556

BLUE 523

GOLD 523

RED 460

WHITE 493

Pro Tips

The twelfth is a risk-reward par 5 that requires a strong tee shot to reach the green in two. A small pond sits on the right with bunkers up the left, both easily visible from the tee. Another pond is situated on the left around 115 yards out all the way to the very front of the green. Finally, the green features a lot of subtle break that players will have to pay close attention to.

# 13 / Hole #13

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 2 Women's 8

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 423

BLUE 386

GOLD 402

RED 310

WHITE 372

Pro Tips

Drives down the right side of the fairway will leave an open shot into the green on this par 4. A long bunker front-right guards a green that is sloped back-to-front.

# 14 / Hole #14

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 4 Women's 2

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 444

BLUE 403

GOLD 403

RED 333

WHITE 372

Pro Tips

An accurate tee shot down the left side of the fairway, avoiding the lateral hazard on the left, is required on the par 4, fourteenth. Anything too far right will have a blind shot in to this thin green that’s protected by one bunker on the left.

# 15 / Hole #15

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 12 Women's 10

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 367

BLUE 347

GOLD 359

RED 150

WHITE 309

Pro Tips

There’s a great deal of trouble on this short par 4. Off the tee, players need to avoid a series of bunker son the right and a lateral hazard on the left. The further left a player goes off the tee, the better angle they’ll have into the green. Two bunkers protect the front and left of this putting surface.

# 16 / Hole #16

Par: 3

Handicaps:
Men's 18 Women's 16

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 166

BLUE 116

GOLD 137

RED 150

WHITE 108

Pro Tips

The final par 3 features a “semi” two-tiered green with a pond sitting about 20 yards in front. Pins in the middle and front are easily accessible, but players should be cautious with a pin located on the smaller back tier.

# 17 / Hole #17

Par: 4

Handicaps:
Men's 16 Women's 12

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 341

BLUE 325

GOLD 332

RED 251

WHITE 265

Pro Tips

Some players may be able to drive this short par 4 if they take their tee shot directly at the green, but that’s more challenging than it appears. The green is elevated and protected by bunkers, so a drive that misses the green will have a tricky pitch. Other players may opt to hit a long-iron off the tee, which leaves a wedge approach in.

# 18 / Hole #18

Par: 5

Handicaps:
Men's 14 Women's 6

Yardage by Tee:

BLACK 533

BLUE 508

GOLD 526

RED 441

WHITE 477

Pro Tips

The finishing hole on the South Course is a long, but reachable, par 5 that doglegs to the right. Tee shots must favor the left side of the fairway, otherwise the player will be blocked out by trees that run up the right. If deciding to lay-up, players will have to decide which of the split fairways to hit. The left is more generous, but leaves a more difficult approach into the green. On the other hand, the right fairway is harder to hit, but leaves an easier third. A lateral hazard and bunkers long guard the green, so the best miss is short.
