Empower Hour: Self Defense for All

Empower Hour: Self-Defense Class This hour will focus heavily on situational awareness and avoidance of potentially dangerous situations. The instructors will teach participants to be prepared and use the defensive tools they already have: their intuition, physical strength, and defensive movements. This class will include striking pads and basic escape techniques. This will be a relaxed, non-judgmental environment where everyone is welcomed and invited to have fun! Genny Altwer is a retired police officer from the San Mateo Police Department. During her career she served as a member of the Critical Incident Response Team in addition to her work as a Tactical Negotiator. Genny has a long history of Martial Arts and is a Second Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Genny also has experience competing in Muay Thai, boxing, and kickboxing. Genny is now a therapist and lives in San Jose with her husband, Marcelo, and their two daughters. Born and raised on the island of Kauai, Aaron Ramson grew up learning his love for martial arts while watching Bruce Lee and practicing karate moves with his brother. Aaron is skilled in multiple forms of fighting including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and boxing. Aaron moved as a young adult to Palm Springs, CA where he served as a paramedic for several years. He is now settled with his wife here, in San Jose, where he enjoys working as the head brewmaster for S27 Alehouse and Brewery.

CAPITAL CONNECTIONS - ANALYZING THE MID-TERM ELECTIONS Tuesday, October 11 | 8:30am-10am A special presentation PRESENTED BY: BUSINESS FORWARD, LGBTQ+ AND DYNAMIC WOMEN COUNCILS SPONSORED BY: STEVE GUERRERO, DIRECTOR AT ANAPLAN Professor Percival will present a non-partisan introduction to some of the major contests (including statewide and local races) in the 2022 midterm election, and provide analysis of what we might expect to happen on election night and beyond. CONSIDER ATTENDING THIS PRESENTATION BEFORE SENDING IN YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT. Dr. Percival earned his Ph.D. in political science at the University of California, Riverside in 2005. His work focuses on American and California politics, criminal justice policy, and racial and social inequality. He is the author or co-author of three books: Smart on Crime: The Struggle to Build A Better American Penal System (2015), California Politics and Government: A Practical Approach (15ed, 2021), and California’s Recall Election of Gavin Newsom: Covid-19 and the Test of Leadership (2022). His work has appeared in State and Local Government Review, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and the Policy Studies Journal, among other outlets
